Kenya: The Original Safari

Kenya is the original home of safari. The concept of African travel was born one the plains of the Masai Mara and across the great expanse of Tsavo. At the turn of the century, safaris were great exploits and romantic adventures that often took place on horseback and by ox wagon. Things are very different today, as the modern day safari grew to embrace ecotourism and conservation. Kenya is one of the most phenomenal wildlife areas in the world: together with Tanzania’s Serengeti, the Masai Mara is the home of the great wildebeest migration, which sees over a million animals grazing across the savannah with powerful predators in their wake. Kenya’s Laikipia Plateau is one of the only places in Africa to see a striped hyena, and its open escarpment hosts all of the wildlife and none of the crowds of the Mara. Mount Kenya is a snow-capped geological masterpiece; Tsavo is an enormous wilderness expanse; the great petrified lakes of the Rift Valley; Amboseli and the big tuskers; the coast of Mombasa; and the safari capital of Nairobi. There is so much to see in this original African travel destination.

Laikipia is not to be overshadowed by the famous and magnificent the Masai Mara. Located in the centre of the country, the Laikipia Plateau reaches from the base of snow-capped Mount Kenya and stretches to the edge of the Great Rift Valley. This vast expanse is home to the second largest population of elephant in East Africa, and holds huge densities of large mammals and plains game. Some of the continent’s rarest and most endangered wildlife species find their homes in this lesser known protected area: the black rhino, the striped hyena, and Grevy’s zebra. Ground-dwelling patas monkeys offer an unusual presence in terms of primates in Laikipia, while the African wild dog brings the regions predator population to new levels.
