On the western boundary of the Kruger National Park is a group of privately owned, Big Five nature reserves dropped their fences years ago and merged with the national park to extend and incorporate a greater conservation area for the free movement of wildlife. These reserves today offer some of the best up-close wildlife encounters in South Africa, both in safari vehicles and on foot. The Klaserie, Timbavati, Balule, and Manyeleti are all a part of this connected stretch of wilderness that houses the country’s incredible biodiversity, the Greater Kruger Park
The Kruger National Park is open to the public and invites both self-driving and guided groups through the gates for day trips or to stay at one of the numerous rest camps; whereas the private reserves that make up the Greater Kruger can only accessed by pre-booked guests who are being accommodated at any of the safari camps operating in the area. From high-end luxury with five-star treatment, to rustic trails camps where you’ll rediscover your roots in nature, the Greater Kruger is ideal for privately guided and personalised experiences. Here is a guideline to what is possible on a BHS Greater Kruger safari.
The Timbavati is the famous home of the incredibly rare, wild, white lions. This large conservation area is one of the handful of privately owned nature reserves that have become part of the Kruger National Park. Lying on the western border of the Kruger, near the town of Hoedspruit, the Timbavati dropped its fences with the Kruger in 1993, becoming part of the Greater Kruger.
Manyeleti has been described as the Greater Kruger’s best kept secret. It’s name means “place of the stars” in Shangaan, and this is surely a testament to its untapped beauty. The reserve is a 23 000 hectare stretch of wild land bordered by the Sabi Sand in the south and Timbavati in the north, while the great Kruger National Park spans out on its east wing. It is one of the private nature reserves that make up the Greater Kruger Park, but to this day it is the least traversed despite being perhaps the most scenically beautiful of them all.
The Klaserie is one of the largest private nature reserves in South Africa, and forms part of the Greater Kruger Park as it shares unfenced boundaries with the Kruger National Park and enjoys the benefit of the free-roaming wildlife presence. It occupies an impressive 60 000 hectares of wilderness along the western border of the Kruger National Park, and borders the Timbavati in the south.
