San Camp

Classic white tents perched on the shore of an enormous sparkling salt pan, each sheltered by a cluster of stately desert palms. Spectacular vistas, soothing and serene – pared down safari elegance with minimal ecological impact, it is the nothingness that attracts. San Camp also runs almost entirely on solar energy, thus dramatically reducing the use of fossil fuels. The perfect place to relax, unwind and retreat. San Camp offers 4 twin and 2 double tents with en-suite bathrooms and spacious veranda.

Makgadikgadi Pans & Nxai Pan National Park

The Makgadikgadi Pans are Botswana’s famous salt pans, and includes one of the largest salt flats in the world. The Makgadikgadi is a massive area of stark, mostly uninhabited land that stretches for 12 000 square km in the Kalahari Basin, between Chobe National Park and the Central Kalahari Game Reserve. After good rains, this arid land fills with a layer of water and grass, inviting the migration of a large population of zebra and wildebeest.

We were going to drive the back-up vehicle, with fuel, spares and camping kit. A rental, even better! No tar roads, a route planned on Google Earth, and off we headed into rural Botswana.

Botswana’s saltpans, that is what lured me on this trip. Oh and adventure, laughing around a campfire, ice-cold beers and photographic opportunities.
