Klein’s Camp

Set in an exclusive private concession deep in the heart of Maasai land in the game-rich northeastern Serengeti, Klein’s Camp reflects the spirit of wild Africa with a vintage safari style. Perched on the edge of the Kuka Hills, ten cottages with whitewashed walls and rich wooden floors overlook the valleys below. The stone interiors of the guest areas open up to breathtaking panoramas and deep leather armchairs invite you to while away the midday hours. In the evening, gather around blazing fireplaces to share the day’s adventures.

Arusha

Arusha is the safari capital of Tanzania; the gateway to the Serengeti, Mount Kilimanjaro, Tarangire, Lake Manyara, and the Ngorongoro Crater. The bustling city is where your northern Tanzanian safari begins and ends, and it is scenically located on the volcanic landscape of the Great Rift Valley with Mount Meru towering at its back. Arusha has the characteristic chaos of an African city, and there are always tourists wandering the city streets enjoying the local cuisine and culture and exploring the arts and crafts for sale. In between safari destinations, it is well worth spending a day or two absorbing the energy of this dusty town, and drinking a locally brewed cup of coffee.

Selous Game Reserve

Selous is the star of a southern Tanzania safari circuit, and easily combined with a trip to Ruaha National Park and a slice of island heaven on Zanzibar island. Its stellar status as Africa’s largest game reserve (double the size of the Serengeti!) is only part of the attraction of this less travelled Tanzanian safari destination. Selous is a stronghold for African wild dog, lion, and elephant, among hundreds of other species, plenty of mammals, and about 450 species of birds. Its location in the south of the country means it doesn’t see the hundreds of thousands of touring visitors that the northern parks receives, so if you are excited by the idea of feeling alone in a great African wilderness, surrounded by amazing biodiversity, Selous is for you.

Greystoke Mahale

Greystoke affects people in a way that no other place does; perhaps it’s because of its remoteness, and because of the mountains rising from the beach at your back, the wide lake with its many different moods and the feeling that you are the only ones here. With just six wood and thatch bandas set on the edge of the forest line at the base of the mountains your days can start there, eating breakfast whilst waiting to hear news of the chimpanzees and deciding what to do with your day.
