The beauty of a self-catering safari appeals specifically to families who are offered the freedom to create an outdoor, wildlife-orientated holiday that suits children and adults alike. South Africans reach out to us to arrange an exclusive self-catering safari, while many large groups travelling from abroad are interested in this accommodating and tailor-made safari experience.
THE LODGE AND LOCATION
Walkers River Camp is prestigiously located in the Timbavati Private Nature Reserve, and is only a 30-minute drive from the town of Hoedspruit, which offers everything a self-catering group would need. The local Hoedspruit airport, which offers flights to and from both Johannesburg and Cape Town, is only 15 minutes’ drive from the camp. With incredible ease of access, Walkers is convenient for both fly-in and road transfer/self-drive guests. Once on the property itself, it becomes clear that the camp is positioned in the most blissful place on the bank of a seasonal river, which attracts an array of animals to drink during the wet season. There is an unobtrusive electrical fence lining the perimeter of camp, which keeps larger animals off the grounds, but keeps the wilderness at guests’ fingertips.
The lodge is ideally equipped for an exclusive group, with a common area consisting of a relaxing lounge, bar, and dining table, while a large swimming pool and sociable boma complete the scene for days spent with family and friends in a private place in the bush. The atmosphere is perfectly cosy for cool winter nights when guests like to gather in the boma around a crackling fire and under the open skies, while hot summers are soothed on the wide, shady lawn surrounding the large swimming pool. There are housekeepers on duty to keep the lodge and rooms clean and tidy, while groundsmen will look after the garden, pool, and fireplace.
The kitchen is properly geared up with fridge-freezers, a gas stove, oven, microwave, plenty of cookware, crockery, and glasses, while the bar has an additional fridge for drinks. Guests are invited to cook for themselves or to enquire about a private chef who will stay on the property during the stay and cater according to guests requirements.
Walkers River Camp can cater for 8 guests at a time, in 5 bedrooms, which are made up to sleep couples, singles, and children in comfort. Bedrooms are traditional and unassuming on the outside, blending in to the wild location, while inside they are spacious and cool with thatched roofs, fans, mosquito nets, and en suite bathrooms with bath and outdoor showers. These rondawel-style rooms open up onto the garden and are setup as follows:
- 3 Rooms with kingsize beds, en suite bathroom, bath, and double outdoor shower.
- 1 Room with two single beds, en suite bathroom, bath, and double outdoor shower.
- 1 Family room with one kingsize bed and two single beds, en suite bathroom with a shower.
Of course, the safari experience is what brings guests to the Kruger in the first place. Many South Africans have grown up with an appreciation for the bush and have spent their lives retreating to nature during school holidays. The access to some of the world’s most iconic animal species is a unique privilege, and Walkers River Camp offers the incredible experience of being able to view this wild world on one’s own terms under the guidance of a professional field guide. The Timbavati is home to all of Kruger’s wild residents, including iconic giraffe, buffalo, zebra, leopard, elephant, lion, rhino, impala, waterbuck, kudu, warthog, and hundreds of fantastic bird species.
The safari quality surrounding Walkers is unbeatable and the landscape of the Timbavati offers areas for epic sundowners and dining around candlelit tables in the bush. A private guide completes the experience by creating the safari magic through professional game drives and walking safaris, introducing the wild and wonderful world in interpretative and inspiring ways. Local Shangaan trackers are the cherry on top and add remarkable value to the safari experience as they bring their unique learned and innate ability to read the signs of the bush. The combination of a guide and tracker ensure that this tailored experience in the Timbavati is of the highest quality and we would recommend hiring both during your stay at Walkers.
